BN, You'll Never Win Again

Najib Razak’s call for ruling coalition Barisan Nasional to adopt Liverpool FC’s iconic anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, saying it would foster unity and camaraderie prior to GE14 – has drawn the ire of the club’s Malaysian football fans on Facebook and Twitter.

I’m aghast. I am alarmed. I am angry.

[For the record, You’ll Never Walk Alone is a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. It became a popular pop hit when Liverpool musicians Gerry and the Pacemakers released their version in 1963.

Prior to the song’s release, band leader Gerry Marsden presented a recording to then Liverpool manager Bill Shankly and the song was quickly adopted by the team and the fans.

Today, it is sung before every home match at Anfield].

How dare this thieving buffoon associate Liverpool with him and BN!!

Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the PKR Youth chief and Liverpool FC fan screamed: “Hoi apahal nak samakan Liverpool dengan penyamun!” (Why would you associate Liverpool with a thief?)

Another fan, Mohammad Firdaus: “Janganlah kaitkan Liverpool dengan kekotoran BN”. (Don’t relate Liverpool to BN’s dirty ways).

Ng BsNg wrote: “With you around, I rather walk alone”.

Some poked fun. YNWA becomes “BN, You’ll Never Win Again”. Or kleptocrats will indeed never walk alone – to prison. (Of course not! He and his band of blood-sucking ministers will all be marched to Sungai Buloh and/or Kajang).

And there are those who reminded Najib of his allegiance to rival football club, Manchester United.

“Say MU fan but wanna use Liverpool anthem?” said Nathan Ramoo.

“Please don’t. You support Man U. Please use whatever song they sing. Thank you”, said Eugene Wang.

Victor Fontaine fumed: “As a Man Utd supporter, if you do this I swear to God, we will riot”.

Najib, get your effing hands off Liverpool!

The White House has shut down as of 12:01 AM Saturday – after US lawmakers failed to agree on a spending deal.

Clap, clap! A Republican president occupies the White House, and Republicans hold the majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

And yet with unified control of government, Donald Trump’s administration couldn’t even chart a course toward keeping the government open.

Trump deserves applause!

[Note: I remembered that in 2013, Republican hard-liners had engineered a 16-day shutdown of the federal government, then under Barack Obama – and more than 800,000 government workers were put on temporary leave. FYI, there have been four government shutdowns since 1990].

Anyway, this shutdown is only temporary. Probably not more than a week.

Politicians, whichever side of the fence they are on, will always strike a deal. I expect the Democrats will buckle. They have grown weak.
