A Royal Thumbs-up for PM Najib Razak

The Malaysian King (known formally as Yang di-Pertuan Agong) Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah (left) had on Monday congratulated Prime Minister Najib Razak on a job well done!
But of course! Malaysians weren’t even a wee bit surprised.
HRH was full of praise for Najib and at one point, he had proclaimed that GST was the country’s savior. It is not a coincidence that this was Najib’s oft-quoted phrase. In a speech at the 34th World Customs Day on January 28, 2016, the PM was cited by national news agency Bernama as having reminded us again(!) that the Goods and Services Tax had indeed saved the economy from turmoil.
Sure, the Agong was reading from a script written by the government. And the government merely congratulated themselves. Please lah! Malaysians are not that stupid, okay?
Still, this royal singing of lavish praises had missed out on one important achievement that should have been included too. They had forgotten to mention what a great job Najib did on 1MDB!

Not only that. The speech also had its fair share of Najib-isms – which we have been receiving a generous earful even before this. The usual rhetoric. (Yawn). Taking quick action against social media abusers who incite hatred or spread seditious and slanderous remarks. Against people who tarnish the image of the country in the eyes of the international community. Against civil servants who leak government secrets. Blah, blah, blah.
Malaysians know that we will keep hearing them because the PM and his goons just love repeating them. The energies spent on giving voice to them may be better spent on fixing the country. But then again, why should they? They are the ones responsible for making the mess we are in.
Isn’t that why the country is in deep shit?
On Tuesday evening, I was at the TMIKL Toastmasters meeting in KL's Jalan Imbi. This club invariably yields good meetings whenever I am there!
