Sunni Jihadists and the Malaysian Connection

The Malaysian Insider has reported that more than 100 Malaysians are believed to be in the Middle East fighting for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The Sunni terror group are a splinter group of al--Qaeda. ISIS are also referred to as ISIL, or the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant. The Levant or al-Sham, is sometimes called Greater Syria, and encompasses  Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Israel. They are notable for their hardline anti-Shia sectarianism and declaring Shia Muslims and other rivals as heretics that deserve death.

In an audio recording released on Sunday, the Sunni Islamists declared the establishment of a “caliphate” that straddles Iraq and Syria. One of their videos even claimed that “there is no army in the world that can withstand the soldiers of Islam”.

ISIS have removed 'Iraq and the Levant' from their name and instead refer themselves simply as The Islamic State – ushering in “a new era of international jihad”.

And if Malaysians too are joining, then this presents an alarming situation. It is a frightening prospect because Malaysian Muslims are indicating their readiness to die for a cause. Once again, the Malaysian government have been caught with their pants down.

But that’s not all. UMNO president Najib Razak who is also the Prime Minister told party members on June 23, 2014 that UMNO should emulate the brave exploits of the jihadists if UMNO wish to survive. He singled out the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Correction. He glorified the ISIS-ISIL militants who are already branded killers and murderers.

It really makes you wonder, doesn’t it when Najib referred to these feared fighters as role models? If Najib is not careful, Malaysian jihadists will soon bring the war home!

That’ll spell big trouble for the country.
