Activists Freed from PAA Re-Charge

The Malaysian Insider pic by Wan Amirul Asraf Wan Omar, May 14, 2014

The authorities are hell-bent on bullying opposition activists.

On May 09, 2014, the Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail went ahead to re-charge the trio Mohd Bukhairy Sofian, Edy Noor Ridzuan and Badrul Hisham Shaharin (also known as Chegubard), under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, for failing to notify the police 10 days before they organized a peaceful gathering. They were alleged to have committed the offence at Dataran Merdeka on Jalan Raja, between 9:00 PM on December 31, 2013 and 1:00 AM on January 01, 2014.

[They were first charged on January 29 but were granted a discharge on April 28 by the Sessions Court].

Today, the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court discharged the three accused persons and declared the charge groundless. Sessions judge Ahmad Bache said he was bound by the April 25 Court of Appeal ruling that a punishment provision under the PAA was unconstitutional.

BTW, Deputy Public Prosecutor Suhaimi Ibrahim had informed the court that the Federal Court would hear on May 27, 2014 Putrajaya's appeal against the Court of Appeal ruling.

On Monday, I was at Cititel MidValley  to attend the MidValley Toastmasters meeting. I was the Grammarian at this meeting. But what impressed me most was that the club was determined to uphold good time-keeping and for that, I say "Well done!". I would give this meeting a score of 7 over 10.

Apologies: Photo quality is not good.
