Target: Mat Sabu

UMNO intends to bring a bill into Parliament to amend the Federal Constitution to only recognize Sunni Islam as Malaysia’s official religion. UMNO's increasingly belligerent stance to gays, cults, Shia Muslims and those it accused of insulting Islam is part of the party's attempts to position itself as the champion of Islam.

UMNO's version of Islam portrays a straitlaced and parochial perspective.

Home Minister Zahid Hamidi upped the ante when he gave approval for the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) to act against alleged Shia Muslims in PAS. Saying it perplexed him how PAS as an Islamist party could have elected a Shia leader into its "number two top post", Zahid said his call was made in the interests of Muslim unity, and not politics!  Of course, he would say that, wouldn’t he?

Anyway, he was pointing his finger at Mohamad Sabu who retained the PAS deputy president’s post in the party's election on November 23, 2013.

Poor Mat Sabu! He has been accused of many things! He wants to turn Malaysia into a republic. He insults the national anthem, Negaraku. He is a Communist sympathizer. And now he is a Shia.

Last Thursday, I was at the D’Utama Toastmasters meeting and I was there just as an observer. This club has always been on my radar and so, I was glad I could pay the club a visit. It was a fairly decent meeting but I was under a spell during the Table Topics session. Hoo Sze Ling’s 2-minute impromptu speech was plainly awesome. That alone was worth the RM10 price of admission. That also explains why I have many photos of her. Overall, I would give this meeting a 6.5 over 10 score.

Note: Lee Wei Seong was present at the meeting to deliver an eulogy for D’Utama member, Jayam Gnanapragasam who passed away recently.
