Honorary Degrees on the Cheap

Malaysian academia is now forever tainted by flippancy and frivolity. Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) today conferred Mahathir Mohamad with an honorary doctorate in Communications and Technology Management – for his contributions to the development of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) when he was the Prime Minister.

Yesterday, it was Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud’s turn. Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) conferred him the honorary doctor of laws in recognition of his development of Sarawak through “astute wisdom and effective and impactful leadership”. What rubbish!

No wonder Malaysian tertiary institutions don’t get much respect!

Celtic extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership with an incisive 4-1 victory against Ross County on Saturday. The opener arrived when Emilio Izaguirre linked up with Charlie Mulgrew on the left-hand side and crossed in for Virgil van Dijk to rise above the opponents’ defence and nod in off the far post (41). And van Dijk added his second goal of the day with another fine header at the front post from a Mulgrew corner that eluded Ross County keeper Mark Brown (53). Ross County managed to get in a goal when Ivan Sproule fired in on the rebound in the 68th minute. But Celtic wasn’t in the mood to be generous and so in the five-minute period that followed, Joe Ledley nodded in twice (70, 73) to put Celtic three ahead.

In this game between Liverpool and Fulham on the same day, the former soundly defeated the latter 4-0. The Reds dominated from start to finish but it was Fulham defender Fernando Amorebieta who gifted Liverpool the first goal when he headed his own net in the twenty-third minute. Martin Skrtel's thumping header doubled the lead three minutes later. The third goal arrived as Steven Gerrard nutmegged Dimitar Berbatov before feeding the ball to Jordan Henderson. The midfielder then found Luis Suarez with a fantastic through ball in the 36th minute and the Uruguayan forward tucked the ball home with ease. The fourth goal came when Gerrard burst forward and played another delightfully weighted pass through to Suarez; the striker considered squaring it before unleashing a thumping shot that flashed beyond Cottagers’ goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and into the net.

The win lifted the Anfield club into second place in the EPL table, two points behind leaders Arsenal, who have a game in hand.
