Crime is No. 1 Worry

The International Islamic University Malaysia’s (IIUM) Communications department conducted a survey that confirmed what we have known all along, i.e. that crime is the number one concern among Malaysians. IIUM lecturer Prof Dr Syed Arabi Idid said the results of the nationwide study, conducted between April 06 and 14, showed that crime has surpassed economic woes as the main worry. Another way of looking at it is that one out of every three adult respondents said crime has become a national problem.

I can only advise these varsity smart alecks to cease conjuring these reports because they are a waste of time. What purpose do they serve anyway? Malaysians except for these armchair academics, BN politicians and the police  already know that crime is a raging epidemic that has spun out of control.

The prime minister finally conceded that runaway crime is a fact of life in Malaysia when he declared war on crime on June 08, 2013. Najib Razak said: “This is a war which will only be successful if all levels of society uphold and support the effort. If we are not united in combating crime, crime will haunt us”. Surely, he knows that Malaysians are ready to support but unfortunately, it is PDRM (the Royal Malaysia Police) which has failed us. So Najib is advised to look at the police and how it operates in an environment that has rampant crime – rather than launch “United Against Crime” and other initiatives that will end up as mere words that will not impress anybody. Is Najib now making an admission that crime in Malaysia is no longer a matter of perception but that it is very real?

I say it is time for the police to buck up! Stop all the other activities that you love to indulge in. Just do the job you are paid to do. And that is, to prevent crime. To stop crime. To make our streets safe again. Is it too much to ask?
