I Love PM

The picture above was splashed across the pages of all mainstream newspapers in Malaysia, indicating that UMNO members really love their PM – I choose to interpret it to mean, “printed money”. The delegates at the UMNO general assembly seemed to suggest that their loyalty to the party must be paid if the party is to depend on their votes in GE13.

Anyway, the UMNO general assembly has confirmed that the party which subscribes to “ketuanan Melayu”  (Malay supremacy) is shaky and scared of the Pakatan Rakyat parties so much so that the whole proceedings centered on attacking the opposition. There were no recommendations of policies and strategies that the rakyat is expecting; it was single-minded Pakatan-bashing all the way! And the well-choreographed meeting had given birth to the bizarre belief that UMNO is re-united and re-energized and its leaders wasted no breath in declaring that achieving two-thirds is no longer an aspiration for UMNO but a comfortable reality.

UMNO secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, when asked if the party was confident it would once again occupy two-thirds of Parliament’s 222 seats after the polls, said “I believe that we will win back two-thirds and we will get back at least all the four Pakatan states... including Kelantan and Penang.”

Former Perlis Mentri Besar Shahidan Kassim agreed that Penang should not be regarded as impossible to recapture. And he added “We are confident of getting back Kedah, even Kelantan and Selangor...”

UMNO deputy minister Mohd Puad Zarkashi was also confident at BN’s chances in the next polls. “Oh definitely, two-thirds majority. I’m very confident,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

If indeed UMNO has re-built its new-found confidence, why doesn’t Najib Razak call for the election ASAP? After all if UMNO is sure of winning 2/3 majority and retaking all the opposition states – why wait any longer?

The BN mandate expires in April 2013, leaving Najib just five months to call elections.
