Donald Trump's No. 1 Ass-Kisser

US Attorney-General William Barr (left) stands accused of directing violence against peaceful protesters, and with peddling a conspiracy theory advanced by Donald Trump in an attempt to smear protesters, who enjoy wide public support.

He even has the cheek to deny that he personally ordered a violent crackdown outside the White House on June 01 to clear peaceful protesters and make way for Trump to have his photo taken with a Bible in hand outside a church. (Read my June 03 post titled "A Trumpian Charade").

In fact, Barr had been spotted reviewing security arrangements outside the White House shortly before the forceful dispersal of protesters began, and Trump’s press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said flatly on Monday: “It was AG Barr who made the decision”.

Nearly 1,300 former justice department officials published an open letter to Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz on Wednesday demanding an internal investigation of Barr’s actions in response to street protests.

As Kandace Montgomery (right), director of Black Visions Collective, an activist organization pointed out: “William Barr is a white man who is serving a racist administration”.

It is obvious that Barr is more than a racist; he enjoys fawning all over Trump too. I am tempted to throw him an insult but I'm afraid I won't do as well as nature did.

But I can agree that he is an ass-kisser par excellence.

We all know that Trump himself favors tough action against protesters, regardless whether they are peaceful or not.

Therefore, Barr and even Trump have made a mockery of the First Amendment. When Americans are attacked for merely protesting, this invalidates the constitution itself.

[Note: The Firat Amendment to the US Constitution protects the freedom of speech, religion and the press. Equally important, it also protects the right to peaceful protest and to petition the government].

Anyway, it is noteworthy to mention that the church photo-op episode was just one of many such incidents of police violence taking place during the #GeorgeFloyd protests. (Read my June 07 post titled "US Police Strike Back").

In fact, in the hours before protesters outside the White House were gassed, Trump held a call with state governors in which the president demanded more aggressive use of force against the demonstrators.

“You have to dominate or you’ll look like a bunch of jerks. You have to arrest and try people”, Trump said on the call.

Barr himself then spoke on the call, advising the governors that the federal government would rely on the Joint Terrorism Task Force – a national law enforcement network that was beefed up after the September 11 attacks – to coordinate operations.

“It’s a tried and true system, it’s worked for domestic home-grown terrorists, and we’re going to apply that model”, Barr said on the call – and parroting the label Trump had used on the protesters.

Imagine that – the people who are out on the streets to protest against George Floyd’s murder, against police brutality, against racism are now considered domestic home-grown terrorists!

Trump then tweeted an enthusiastic endorsement of the Republican senator Tom Cotton’s call for active-duty troop deployments in response to protests, specifically calling on soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division, 10th Mountain, 82nd Airborne, 1st Cavalry and 3rd Infantry.

“100% Correct”, Trump wrote. “Thank you Tom!”

Donald K Sherman (left), deputy director of the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington watchdog group said that Barr’s masquerade as a military man amounted to “an abuse of power, and it is a harbinger of potentially worse things to come”.

He added: “The stakes are only going to get higher from here”.

And I can only nod my head in agreement.

Americans should not allow William Barr to get off scot-free! Methinks, he should be charged with criminal intimidation; it’s as simple as that.
