The $1 Billion Joker

Who would have imagined that a story of a battered and rejected loner and loser to boot and who solves his problems with a gun would be so successful?

That’s right, Joker’s cinematic success is unprecedented and unrivaled.

We know that the movie which is a dark origin story of a DC Comics character was always going to catch the eye of comic book movie fans because of its source material – but the casting of Joaquin Phoenix in the title role and the movie’s awards bona fides have made “Joker” appointment viewing for the non-comic book crowd as well.

Yup, it has unloaded an awful lot of tickets and on Sunday, it surpassed $1 billion in gross sales at box offices worldwide!

It’s obviously a big deal whenever any movie achieves $1 billion worth of ticket sales – but where Joker is concerned, to say it exceeded expectation is a gross understatement.

Given the green light as a smaller-scale comic book adaptation compared to the usual DC and Marvel fare that’s shown to the masses, it’s now the third highest-grossing DC Comics movie of all time, trailing behind only Aquaman at #1 and The Dark Knight Rises at #2. And it is the sixth Warner Bros movie to cross $1 billion, as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2; The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and of course, The Dark Knight also share that monumental achievement.

It surely must say something when Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker outmatched Heath Ledger's portrayal in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. That in itself is one heck of a statement!

In fact, there are now 43 films to have reached the $1 billion mark. And yet, Joker is wholly unique, it is different as it is daring and definitely, sets itself apart from just about every other movie in the $1 billion club. More than that, it proves that even dark, depressing, discomforting and destructive films can reach a mass audience!

Anyway, Joker's box office receipts after 45 days totaled a grandly $1,016,599,593, according to Box Office Mojo. Wow, wow, wow!!!
