Lynas Hypocrisy and Betrayal

On Thursday, the Pakatan Harapan government via the Atomic Energy Licensing Board gave Lynas a 6-month lifeline.

There were conditions of course.

Lynas must build their “cracking and leaching” facility outside Malaysia within four years of the renewal, after which they would not be permitted to produce radioactive residue exceeding one becquerel per gramme at their Gebeng plant. And the Aussie company must also identify a permanent disposal facility, with written approval from the relevant state government.

The authorities' ruling is preposterous because it represents a betrayal of the commitment made by PH to shut down Lynas.

In the meantime, Kuantan folks can expect to be exposed to radioactive waste.

Yeo Bee Yin (right), the Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change should be ashamed of herself. Better still, she should quit her ministerial position.

She was righteously indignant when she brought up the issue of over 450,000 tonnes of plastic waste that came into the country – but with the Lynas decision, she has allowed the nation to be a dumping ground for radioactive waste.

One news report mentioned 580,000 tonnes of the said residue piling up in a flood-prone Gebeng backyard.

Bentong MP Wong Tack had highlighted that after the stipulated four years, Lynas would no longer enjoy tax exemption – and he said he is anticipating the rare earths processing plant to close shop and migrate to another country.

MCA’s Wee Ka Siong (left) on Friday blasted PH and even published a list of names – identifying a baker’s dozen of Federal ministers who once pledged to get rid of Lynas when they were in the opposition.

They are Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu, Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad and Human Resources Minister Minister M Kulasegaran, Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok, Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad, Communication and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Salahuddin Ayub, Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa, who is in charge of Islamic affairs.

Wee appended a collage of photos that show these bozos putting down their signatures for the Lynas pledge:

The pathetic Pakatan Harapan government are telling us point-blank that they don't keep the promises they make. Therefore, they are dishonest and untrustworthy!
