Stay Angry with Michelle Yeoh

The other person whom Malaysians are angry with is Bond girl Michelle Yeoh.

Five years ago, then-PM Najib Razak went on a ‘mission impossible’ to reach out to the Chinese electorate. The purpose was to get them to support him and secure their votes in GE13.

Najib, of course, couldn’t do this on his own – so he enlisted celebrities as a way to get the attention of the urban Chinese voters. Yeoh was a good catch – and so, she was used as a live prop to sell Najib and BN.

On April 20, 2013, Yeoh happily appeared at an election rally and with a fervent enthusiasm that could rival the eager politicians on the ceramah circuit – she praised Najib to the skies and even better, goaded Malaysians to vote for the then-caretaker prime minister.

Malaysia’s TV3 Bulletin Utama, April 21, 2013

Yeoh theatrically declared: “We have a leader here who has done so many good things and will do more. I hope from the bottom of my heart that he will remain as the Prime Minister and I ask all of you to give him a strong mandate”.

The accolades she generously heaped onto Najib invited savage salvos of caustic criticisms.

Nonetheless, she showed courage to defend her decision, arguing that everyone was free to give their views.

“This is a democratic country and we are free to voice our opinion. I believe all of us want to do good for our country”, she insisted.

Of course, she lives in a world far removed from ordinary folks. Given her wealth, fame and status, I’m sure she couldn’t give two hoots about the rakyat’s daily challenges, whether it is putting food on the table, holding onto a job and/or coping with a cost of living that is forever shooting upwards.

After all, she comes from a well-to-do family. And she is already very successful in her own right. But why must take advantage of Malaysia?

Her fiancé, former Ferrari Formula-1 owner 66-year-old Frenchman Jean Todt who was appointed Malaysia tourism ambassador was said to have been paid a fee of RM593,400 plus RM388,000 for the couple’s holidays in Malaysia annually (Finance Twitter, September 22, 2018).

Wow, that's a lot of money for us to give away!

For a celebrated scion of a privileged family, it shouldn't be just about taking  how about giving back? Couldn't you consider it as a service to your country, Yeoh? I'm sure Todt would listen to you!

Rubbing salt into the wound, the said ceramah where Yeoh had rah-rahed for Najib was a 5,500-table mega dinner held at the Port Klang Free Zone, the infamous place that had raised a lot of eyebrows due to its RM12 billion PKFZ corruption scandal involving MCA. In case, you didn’t know, Yeoh’s late father, Yeoh Kian Tiek was a former Perak MCA chairperson. (Meaning, she is also guilty by association).

Since Najib was ousted from the government, Yeoh has been silent.

Until September 20, 2018 when she posted on her Facebook and Instagram about the WSJ bestseller Billion Dollar Whale: “I’m loving this brilliantly reported new book by journalists Bradley Hope and Thomas Wright. #billiondollarwhale. Fascinating book”.

I’m not too certain if she had actually read the non-fiction, much less understand it if she had. I’m rubbing my chin and feeling cynical about her claim because if she had properly read the copy – she would have learned that her Najib is the world’s No. 1 crook!

I’m speculating that Yeoh is merely trying to generate positive publicity for herself and get back into our good books!

It won’t work because in this Malaysian ori drama, she can never be cast as a hero. Only a bit part as somebody who shamelessly sucks up to Najib.

A week after she posted a selfie with the cover of the much-talked-about text, it was reported that the Malaysian actress is set to produce the film based on the said book.

Yeoh had signed a deal with SK Global’s Ivanhoe Pictures to start producing movies and this will be her first project. (Ivanhoe Pictures co-produced Yeoh’s latest feature Crazy Rich Asians).

It looks like I won’t be holding my breath for the motion picture because I’m NOT going to watch it. I’m going to stay angry with Michelle Yeoh.

In my book, Yeoh is an irredeemable Najib fawner. An incorrigible chump. A shameless stooge.
