Don't Repeal Anti-Fake News Act 2018

I am having an abundance of good vibes about Mahathir Mohamed and his PH team to bring positive transformation to the country.

But I must confess I am not in favor of having the Anti-Fake News Act 2018 repealed anytime soon.

I recall the previous Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak (left) scolding PH for spreading fake news to pre-empt their defeat in GE14. And that was just one day before the elections.

Four days earlier, the then Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed (right) warned action against those disseminating fake information, not just during the 14th General Election, but also after.

Now these two statements already qualify as “fake news” because they are simply not true.

For a start, Pakatan Harapan won GE14. And the fact that Salleh and especially Nur Jazlan would be unable to take any action because they were whipped good and proper in GE14.

Salleh Said lost to Warisan’s Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis @ Fakharudy for P169 Kota Belud in Sabah and Nur Jazlan lost to PH-Amanah’s Salahuddin Ayub for P161 Pulai in Johor.

My point is, if statements are proven to be untrue, then they are considered fake.

I wish for a stay of the said Act’s revocation because I believe we should use it against those UMNO politicians who were really the guilty ones in respect to manufacturing and spreading fake news.

Just to give them a taste of their own medicine. But more importantly, to educate them how insidious this Act actually is.

Najib Razak’s (left) many pronouncements in the run-up to GE14 are mostly “fake news” – so why not bring him to book first?

LOL, I support!
