RM9.5 Million to Anwar Ibrahim's Chief Prosecutor

PKR is pressing Muhammad Shafee Abdullah (right) for answers following an explosive claim by London-based Sarawak Report that the prominent lawyer received RM9.5 million from Prime Minister Najib Razak.

“I urge Najib and Shafee to come out and explain…”, said the party’s Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

He linked the allegation to Shafee’s controversial role as the chief prosecutor in jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy trial in 2015, and said the veteran lawyer had even held roadshows following the PKR leader’s conviction.

In fact, one blogger on UMNO politics wrote: “It is normal for those on the side of the defeated to keep voicing out their dissatisfaction and to press for justice, but it is certainly extraordinary, strange and weird that the winning side should keep trying to convince the public of the correctness of the decision already made by five Federal Court judges”.

Indeed, Shafee had been incredibly tireless in trying to justify the guilty verdict.

“Such malicious attempt by the special prosecutor is not only in contempt of court, but clearly shows his intentions to bring down Anwar on behalf of Najib”, said Nik Nazmi, adding that Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali “must also reveal what action he will take”.

On Wednesday, Sarawak Report named Shafee as one of the recipients “of money from Najib’s 1MDB slush fund accounts”.

Shafee was appointed to head the prosecution team in the government’s appeal to overturn Anwar’s acquittal from a charge of sodomy involving his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan. He continued to lead the charge despite attempts to disqualify him by Anwar’s lawyers – and he successfully secured a conviction too.

Anwar is currently serving his five-year jail sentence.

Following his conviction, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri said the government had paid Shafee a mere RM1,000 for his legal services. She must think Malaysians are both gullible and stupid.

Thus far, Shafee is silent on the matter.

Indeed, 1MDB is a humongous scandal that will not hide and worse, refuses to go away.
