The UN Dump Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman lasted less than two months in the UN as her ambassador role was abruptly canned this week.

The superheroine was given the role of Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls – raising strident complaints from those who thought a swimsuit-clad white woman with big breasts wasn't diverse or empowering enough.

She was unveiled on October 21, 2016 in a glitzy ceremony featuring Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman in the 1970s TV show, and Gal Gadot (left), who took on the role in Batman V Superman – but not everybody was applauding.

A silent protest was staged by many UN staffers and audience members who turned their backs to the stage, some with their fists in the air.

Outside, protestors held up signs that said “I’m not a mascot” and “Let’s get real”.

Opponents also started an online petition that was eventually signed by more than 44,000 people – and asked secretary-general Ban Ki-moon to reconsider.

The petition read: 'Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent "warrior" woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character's current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit'.

The appointment was tone deaf at a time when real women are fighting against sexual exploitation and abuse, and that there were plenty of real heroines that could be the face for gender equality, critics had maintained.

There were questions about whether the character's current portrayal as a violent, sword-wielding warrior was a positive role model for young girls.

Now, after a public backlash, the indestructible Greek demigoddess has been abruptly sent packing back to Themyscira or ‘Paradise Island’. Oh well…

On Wednesday, Adam Lallana scored twice and created another goal – a fine crossing for Divock Origi to prod home a sublime team goal – to give Liverpool an emphatic 3-0 win over Middlesbrough.

The Reds really showed their classy dominance in this spirited EPL game.
