Wear Traditional But Not the Saree!

The Ipoh City Council’s invitation to staff members to a special Aidilfitri gathering on July 01, 2016 – this Friday – has raised heckles!

All because it stipulates a dress code.

And there is nothing wrong with that.

It mandates Malay employees to wear "national clothes" but the advice on attire for the other communities raises angry questions. Those invitees can wear "traditional clothes with the exception of the saree".

For some reason, Indians and their ‘sarees’ are being singled out!

On Saturday, it tried to wiggle itself out of the raging ruckus of its own making. It claimed there had been a misinterpretation.

Then it spectacularly showed how seriously stupid it was when it said: “When it says 'except saree', it means the staff can wear a suitable saree”.

Meaning, the word 'except' carries no weight, no meaning, no relevance in that particular context. 'Except' becomes redundant.

I don’t wish to demean myself by giving a response. Kindly don’t insult my intelligence by being inanely idiotic!

And I bet those ignoramuses didn't know that the saree is one of the oldest and perhaps the only surviving unstitched garment from the past.

Yesterday, I was in Uptown 5 in PJ’s Damansara Utama to attend the Phoenix Toastmasters meeting. I was the General Evaluator.

It was a good meeting and only because Nicole Choe was the Toastmaster-of-the-Evening! I certainly found her to be a class act! She presented herself with dignity, grace, and sincerity.
