UMNO Newspaper Enjoys Freedom of Speech

The government crackdown under the Sedition Act 1948 has been sweeping. And it is ongoing. Therefore, the police have been kept busy investigating and charging Malaysians for alleged sedition.

Marina (left), daughter of Mahathir Mohamad put it very succinctly. Only Utusan Malaysia has total freedom of speech.

Critics have accused the Malay newspaper of stoking racial sentiments. But it is not just the UMNO-linked daily – the Malay right-wing NGOs are equally guilty. And some UMNO politicians too.

It is also not correct to say that only Utusan enjoys this freedom. Mahathir is free to say anything he wants. And as I mention him, even Marina is free to comment as well – without fear of being arrested and charged for sedition.

Some Malaysians are safe from prosecution while others must live in “fear” because they don’t know if and when the police will come knocking on their doors. This is the current state of affairs in this country.

Today, the Malaysian women squash team retained their gold medal in the team event at the Asiad.

The team event was introduced in 2010 and the women won both the individual and teams events then. In Guangzhou, China. In 2014, they repeated the feat they have now won back-to-back singles and team gold in Incheon, Korea.

For David personally it took her gold medal tally in the Asiad to six and set her up as the best Malaysian performer this far in the series.
