Dengue is Still On the Rise

I wrote on the “Dengue Outbreak” on July 19, 2014 – read my article at this link – and do not be lulled into thinking dengue is not a serious threat. It still is!
Last week alone, 3,142 dengue cases were reported! This brings the total number of cases to 51,987 (SJ Echo, Malaysia, August 2014, p 12). I know a lecturer friend who had dengue and one of my DIBA students at Sunway University was similarly struck down by the disease, causing her to miss sitting for her exams.
Universiti Sains Malaysia Professor of Entomology Abu Hassan Ahmad highlighted a phenomenon he labels the “bedroom dengue” – it spreads to the whole family! One family member may have been bitten by the Aedes mosquito (pic) elsewhere. He or she comes home and is bitten by mosquitos around the house, which in turn bite other members of the family, infecting them as well.
In the Subang Jaya municipality – which includes Bandar Sunway – ten hotspots have been identified. One area is the PJS11/26, i.e. Sun-U Residence! In case you dont know, it is just next door to Sunway University.
On Wednesday, I was on Level 2 at the Federal Kuala Lumpur to attend the ITC Bintang Toastmasters meeting. I was the Table Topics Evaluator. This was my first meeting there since Benny Chia took over as club president.

The club’s meetings have always been well-attended and the speeches and evaluations did not disappoint. One speaker in particular deserves special mention – she delivered CC #4 'How to Say It' and even by my standards, she was impressive! Good job, Solmaz Parpaei!
A really good meeting and for sure, I am giving it a score of an 8 over 10!
