Penis Festival

Japan is indeed a curious place. In Kawasaki, there is a celebration that is called the Kanamara Matsuri, the Festival of the Steel Phallus. It generally falls on the first Sunday in April and it is centered around a penis-venerating tabernacle.

There is a story behind it. A sharp-toothed demon had hidden inside the vagina of a young woman and it castrated two young males on their wedding nights. The damsel sought help from a blacksmith, who fashioned an iron phallus to break the demon’s teeth, and that’s why it became a shrine.

And this shrine was once popular among prostitutes who prayed for protection from sexually transmitted diseases. The sanctum was also said to offer business prosperity, easy delivery, marriage, and married-couple harmony.

Today, the festival is used to raise money for HIV research.

I am disappointed that Liverpool FC have given up on Luis Suarez (left). The deal has been signed and the Uruguay player is heading for Barcelona.

The departure of Suarez is sure to leave a huge void in the Liverpool side that narrowly missed out on winning their first league title in 24 years last season. And Brendan Rodgers is going to gamble again next season.
