Satan's Work in Malaysia

On April 08, 2014, Islamist group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) described ‘liberalism’ – the philosophy founded on liberty and equality – as the Mephistophelian manifestation of Satan’s maleficent struggle to deceive mankind.

Muslims must be on guard when liberals push for civil rights, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, free trade, private property, and free and fair elections.

Isma central committee member Mohamad Ismail had, in fact, accused liberalism of trying to subvert the faith of Muslims. He continued: “They (the liberals) hide behind false arguments and jargons which look pretty, but in spirit are deviant and far away from the guidance of syarak (the Islamic moral code)”.

In Quranic lore, Syaitan, or Satan, is the Devil who was originally a djinn that refused to bow down to Adam, the first Man, and was cursed by Allah to spend his life in hell for eternity. However, Satan requested for his punishment to be deferred until the Day of Judgment – until which he and his minions are said to be free to seduce the world into committing sin. In his quest to corrupt us, Mohamad claimed that Satan had managed to turn us away from Allah through the pursuit of philosophies such as liberalism.

He named as examples Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Islamic figure Abdullah Saba’, whom Sunni Muslims see as one of the founders of the Shi’a school of Islam and which has been branded deviant in Malaysia.

If we follow Mohamad’s argument, then the likes of Barack Obama and most luminaries in the western world should be labelled satanic!

Of course, many of us will be quick to brand Isma as representing radical Islam and we will leave it at that.

But five weeks later, Prime Minister Najib Razak made similar comments. Najib (who proclaims himself as the voice of moderate Islam) declared that Islam is now under threat. And he said these threats come in the guise of humanism, secularism, liberalism and human rights.

Najib said this to a public audience on May 13, 2014 at the opening the fifty-seventh national-level Quran Recital Assembly at the Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Ahmad Shah in Kuantan, Pahang.

Can you spot the difference between Mohamad and Najib’s pronouncements?

You can actually spot the difference? Wow, you are not very smart, are you?
