A Great Man

Nelson Mandela, aged 95, anti-Apartheid activist and celebrated statesman passed away peacefully on Thursday evening in the company of his family.

He was a revolutionary who was charged with inciting riots and spent 27 years behind bars before he was released in 1990. His release coincided with the fall of apartheid. And he became South Africa's first black president who led the peaceful transition from white-only rule.

A humanitarian. An architect of peace. An icon of freedom. He represents the most vivid example in modern times of the power of forgiveness and reconciliation.

The world is showering him with deserving plaudits. I am just going to describe him, simply as "a great man"! Certainly, he leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. Rest in Peace, Nelson Mandela (1918-2013).
