Farcical Freedom

The two members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot, who were serving two-year jail terms for their part in a performance critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin, have been released from prison on Monday. [Have you read my post last Saturday titled ‘Russian Amnesty”?] 

But Putin's pardon is a farce really because Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were freed about two months before their prison sentences were due to end! 

I believe – and I am not alone in this – that the amnesty for this duo was a publicity stunt to bolster the government's image before it hosts the Winter Olympics in February 2014. For sure, the country’s record on human rights will be under intense scrutiny.
