Courageous Nurul Izzah

PKR's Nurul Izzah Anwar (above) has offered her conditional support of the LGBT and is for a non-compulsory religious practice. Freedom of religion should be applied equally to everyone in the country including the Malays, she said. A courageous statement from a courageous politician! We should support her!

Hardly had the dust settled when the wicked barbs of impetuous enmity rained on Nurul. It was to be expected. We are talking about UMNO cads who are unable to respond intelligently or even semi-intelligently. They did however successfully launch a blitzkrieg of acrimonious acerbity. [It’s very odd that there’s nary a nasty word against the anti-Islam Chua Soi Lek].

PAS’ Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad leapt to her defence, giving the view that Muslims are by choice, not by being Malays. He had explained: “The message that Nurul Izzah wanted to present was that for Muslims, don’t assume that we are Muslims because we are Malays, don’t assume that we are Muslims because of ancestry.”

I certainly agree. Religion must be based on faith and faith alone. And even if you have faith but nothing else, not even a religion – that is fine too. Didn’t Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho in Brida (1990) write “None of us knows what might happen even the next minute, yet still we go forward. Because we trust. Because we have Faith.” Nicely put!
