Speech Contest Judging

Every year, speech contests – a Toastmasters tradition – are being organized. As a regular contestant, I can say that the judging quality is sometimes disappointing. Anyway, Division P is organizing a “Quality Contest Judging” workshop (September 08, 2012) that is going to be really helpful to those answering the call to judge contests. “Helpful” because they do help define and refine a Toastmaster's speech contest judging skills. I have confidence that this workshop will do just that because the facilitators, Low Yat Seow and Geoff Andrew are distinguished Toastmasters whom I know personally and therefore, I can vouch for their competency. I would strongly urge Toastmasters to sign up for it, particularly if they are likely to become judges for any of the speech contests that are being planned. For those interested to get the tickets (they are only RM20), you may contact me.

This evening, I drove to the Tropicana Golf & Country Resort in Petaling Jaya to attend the Crystal Toastmasters meeting. This ladies-only Toastmasters club is growing from strength to strength. The minute I walked into the meeting room and I can sense the enthusiasm, the euphoria, the energy. Actually, I had wanted to just enjoy the meeting but Tan Saw Bee wouldn’t have any of it and so I ended up as the Table Topics Evaluator. The five speakers were skilful and therefore, they presented a challenge even for a proficient evaluator like me! Still, I honestly think I did well. The assignment speeches and evaluations were generally good and that’s why I am awarding this meeting a score of an 8 out of a 10 overall.
