Kumar in Kuala Lumpur

You may already have known that Singapore’s leading stand-up comedian was in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Drag queen Kumar gave a no-holds-barred performance that was really entertaining. As he once said, “You can get away with murder if you are funny". And that was exactly what he delivered – caustic wit and biting observations about life in both Malaysia and Singapore that focused on politics, race, and sex – at a reckless, rollicking rate that made the audience roll in the aisles.

Kumar is astonishingly popular in straight-laced Singapore and this is all the more remarkable because this is the country where cross-dressing is not in vogue, and homosexuality remains illegal. The fact that Kumar mostly plies his trade in Singapore is testimony to his immense talent. For those who still don’t know Kumar – he is Kumarason Chinnadurai (born August 10, 1968) and he made his name at the now defunct Boom Boom Room.

Anyway, I joined colleagues and friends for Kumar’s one-night-only show and it was an unforgettable evening of irreverent fun. I managed to snap some photos of Kumar
