Mahathir Rebuts

We all know that Marina Mahathir (left) and her daughter were at Bersih 3.0. Therefore, it wasn’t a revelation that Marina would write about her Bersih expereince in her Musings column in yesterday’s The Star: “…But the violence, especially from those meant to protect us, is impossible to deny, what with the thousands of videos, photographs and eyewitness accounts. I have been puzzling over this for a while. How is it that the police turned from benign to hostile seemingly without much reason? And, if as our Home Minister insists, nobody ordered the police violence, what made them do it, and to such a disproportionate extent? Sixty-five people wound up in hospital, out of which only two were policemen. Surely this says something.” Even her daughter had videotaped the protest – watch her recording on my blog titled “Ineza’s Bersih 3.0" dated May 07, 2012.

So, the Bersih 3.0 violence discharged by the police is a fact! I don’t know why the government is still in denial. This includes the decrepit and senile ex-Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad – in fact, he even repudiated his daughter’s claim of police battery. He wrote in to the same newspaper. “Many who were hurt were not beaten by the police. The demonstrators, too, attacked anyone they thought were watching or recording what was happening," he was quoted as saying by The Star. This was really a cheap shot – he was hurling brickbats at the more than one hundred thousand participants who braved the Saturday afternoon for Bersih 3.0, including me! I guess an idiot will always be an idiot!

And Mahathir spiced his dumb comments by adding: “And there were the red shirts, the specially trained hooligans from PAS whose job was to use force".

For those of us who were physically there – and Mahathir certainly wasn’t there! – what he had said and written about Bersih 3.0 were nothing more than lies!
