Wan Azizah's Merdeka Message

PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail reinforced what I said early this morning when in her National Day message, she urged Malaysians to give meaning to what she called “total” independence by seeking freedom from political, economic, moral and social oppression. I am sure there are many more Malaysians who think as we do – and until we break free from the secure grip of UMNO manacles, we will not really be “free”!

In a major policy setback for Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard (above), the High Court of Australia ruled the refugee swap deal with Malaysia should not go ahead because Australia could not guarantee human rights for asylum seekers in Malaysia. And the rejection is right because we don't even have laws that recognize the status of refugees in the country; we have yet to ratify and accede to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol.

This is a slap in the face for both Gillard and our Najib! Besides, she made a fatal mistake of not seeking Mahathir’s counsel – he could have given her plenty of advice on how to muzzle the judiciary in Australia!
