Najib's Wild Claim

I was at the MIM premises this morning to attend the MIMKL Toastmasters meeting. This one was different from normal meetings because it had a theme that centered on ‘royalty’. Thematic meetings – conceptualized by member Ahmad Fakhri – are organized annually and they add color to the meetings. Let me illustrate. The Toastmaster-of-the-Day became the Grand Master-of-the-Day, the Sergeant-at-Arms became the Chamberlain-at-Arms, the Humor Master became the Court Jester, the General Evaluator became the Chancellor of Evaluation, Ah Counter became Ah Marshal, Grammarian became Keeper of the Words, and Timekeeper became Time Knight. And some members even came suitably garbed in regal attire.

At MIMKL, I am normally picked to be an evaluator and this meeting was no different. I was tasked to evaluate Sandhora Kasim who delivered her CC speech # 9 and ahem, I was voted the Best Project Speech Evaluator from amongst four evaluators.

On Friday too, Najib Razak made another wild claim that Anwar Ibrahim had deliberately mismanaged the economy as finance minister (during the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and 1998) in order to compel then-prime minister Mahathir Mohamad’s exit and take his place. Najib had maintained that Anwar “raised interest rates by 20 per cent and cut (public) allocations to ruin the economy all because he wanted to be prime minister, because he wanted to push Dr Mahathir out” (Webpage, posted June 10, 2011). And all along I had believed that it stemmed from the economic “bubble” conditions that existed in the affected countries, including Malaysia.

I am now beginning to take a dim view of the University of Nottingham where Najib studied for his bachelor’s degree in industrial economics – if he can interpret the causes of that economic malaise to one man’s scheming. After all, the crisis affected not just Malaysia but also other countries, e.g. Thailand, Indonesia and S Korea. I can only shake my head in disbelief – ludicrous Najib is making an ass of himself, that's for sure!
