Focus on Sarawak

The Sarawak campaign kicked off yesterday with BN fielding candidates in all 71 constituencies. The dominant Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak (PPB) will be contesting 35 seats, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) 19, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) nine, and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) eight.

On the other side, PKR is fielding 49 candidates, DAP fifteen and PAS five. Also SNAP is contesting 26 seats, Parti Cinta Malaysia six as well as the horde of independents trying their luck.

This time, the state election has attracted a record turnout of 213 candidates and all seats will be contested for the first time in the state’s history. Can BN continue to monopolize power? Or can PR break BN’s stranglehold? Will SNAP make inroads? Or will it be at the expense of PR? This is going to be a very exciting state election. I wait with bated breath for April 16 – polling day.
