Proud Sabahan

I made another CC speech at the Taman Indrahana Toastmasters meeting – this time delivering speech # 5 Your Body Speaks titled “Why Oh Why”. And my evaluator was Dominic Joseph, DTM. And for my effort, I won the Best Speaker ribbon. Since I have reached the CC manual’s half-way mark, I was also awarded the ½ CC ribbon – this is one of a select few clubs that does this. A nice gesture really.

Here’s an interesting story about a Sabahan weightlifter who went to New Delhi and won a gold medal in the 62 kg category. Aricco Jumitih’s victory at the Commonwealth Games set tongues wagging because he was wearing the Sabah state attire – which according to some people did not reflect the country’s image at an international sporting event.

But the other interesting twist is that the Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek yesterday didn’t bat an eyelid! Instead he chided those who made the criticism because he said it was negative! As he explained to Malaysian reporters today: “Maybe what he was wearing was the most comfortable attire for Arrico during the competition and he proved it right by winning the gold medal. What is the point of wearing the ‘right’ attire and losing compared with winning with an alternative attire?” Huh?

I suppose I shouldn’t blame Aricco. If Muhyiddin can be Malay first and Malaysian second – what is wrong if Aricco is Sabahan first and Malaysian second? Now if we wish to blame somebody, who do you think we should point our finger to?
