Dog Meat Anyone?

Despite public furor, Veterinary Services Department (DVS) deputy director-general, Dr Ahmad Suhaimi Omar, is reported to be sticking by his suggestion last week that stray dogs held at pounds be sold for human consumption – as a method of stray management (Webpage, posted March 12, 2010).

Of course, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and other dog-loving organizations are up in arms at this suggestion. I don’t blame them, but we must recognize that in some parts of the world, people do eat dogs and also cats, horses, camels, bats, snails, spiders, scorpions, insects, snakes, squirrels, sago grubs – and this is not even an exhaustive list!
